I own a 2023 K5 LX. I received the claimed “fix” as soon as the dealership could schedule an appointment for me. I finished it, and they said, “You’re good, no problem with the tank.”
As far as I know, they just inspected the tank for swelling and updated the software.
So far, I’ve read only one K5 owner’s tank swelling despite Kia’s “fix”.
I believe my car could be totaled at any time because this problem has yet to be resolved, and Kia has not informed us of any updates.
So far, how many of you completed the update but still had swelling? And is there anyone working at Kia on here who could tell us what is really going on with this issue and if they are working on a real fix…
Make sure you don’t overfill the tank. When the handle comes off, that’s it. Do not keep trying to top off. Overfilling the tank is bad. It can damage the charcoal canister and vent system on any car, not only H/K. If there is something incorrect, you should see a warning light. If you’re really concerned, acquire a good tablet-style scan tool rather than a cheap OBD2 reader. It can monitor your tank’s pressure, purge, and vent valve performance. Hook it up every now and then to reassure yourself that nothing is wrong. Because it is a very rare issue, you do not hear much about it. According to what I’ve heard, if this happens, Kia will buy back the automobile. Aside than that, simply drive and have fun.
I’ve got a 2021 K5 GT Line AWD and haven’t had any issues. It just went in for it’s 30k maintenance and they inspected the tank, noted that it didn’t have any issues. The car hasn’t had a single issue, to be honest.
This subreddit makes me realize how bad the k5 actually is… has terrible brake rotors that doesn’t last as long as it SHOULD, the brakes alone are terrible especially during bumps that ive never experienced in any other car now a expanding tank issue
Chrome strips are also lifting off, the leather armrest is broken, and the wire harness may be faulty, causing AC problems. Also, the gas cap won’t open lol.
